Lead carbon battery technology was first proposed by L. T Lam et al. of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSRIO) in Australia as the concept of super batteries. Research began in Kogawa, Japan, the United States began to attach importance to it, and then in China's research and development. It has been more than a decade now.

 

Lead carbon batteries can be understood as upgraded versions of lead-acid batteries. Lead carbon batteries integrate the technology of lead batteries and supercapacitors, and are a dual function energy storage battery with both capacitive and battery characteristics. They have the advantages of instant high-capacity charging of supercapacitors, as well as energy advantages, allowing for fast charging and discharging.

 

Compared to lithium batteries, safety is a major selling point of lead-carbon batteries.

 

In recent years, accidents of combustion and explosion in lithium-ion battery energy storage stations have occurred from time to time, and the verified reasons are mostly due to the "thermal runaway" of the battery, which is determined by the characteristics of the battery. Lead carbon batteries have no combustibles, a relatively low energy density, and a long temperature rise process, making them easy to monitor and manage by BMS (battery management system). In addition, inorganic electrolytes and flame-retardant ABS (thermoplastic engineering plastic) battery shells will not cause combustion problems.

 

Another major advantage of lead-carbon batteries is their high cost-effectiveness. Their energy density can be increased to 40-60Wh/kg, and their power density can reach around 300-400W/kg. Their performance is already close to the capacity of some lithium batteries, and more importantly, their cost is still 0.6-0.8rmb/Wh, lower than other batteries such as lithium batteries, which has a good price advantage.

 

In addition, compared to lead-acid batteries, lead-carbon batteries have an 8-fold increase in charging speed, a 3-fold increase in discharge power, and a 6-fold increase in cycle life.

 

Yang Yusheng, an academician of the CAE Member, once wrote that the lead carbon battery mainly added special activated carbon (or special porous carbon, which is also the origin of the word "carbon" in the lead carbon battery) to the negative electrode of the lead acid battery, which solved the problem of sulfation (that is, the crystal particles of lead sulfate grew up and lost the charge discharge reversibility), and extended the battery life by several times. In addition to its inherent advantages of safety, affordability, and ease of regeneration, lead-carbon batteries should become the preferred choice for large-scale energy storage at present.

 

Lead carbon batteries also have their own drawbacks. The addition of activated carbon increases the power density of the battery and prolongs its cycle life. At the same time, due to the occupation of some electrode space by activated carbon, the energy density decreases, which may also increase the gas evolution rate of the electrode.

 

Moreover, there are many types of research and development of active carbon materials for the negative electrode of lead-carbon batteries, and how to further improve performance and control costs still needs to be rebalanced.
