Solid state batteries and liquid state batteries are both branches of lithium batteries, with the main difference being the use of electrolytes. Both use solid and liquid electrolyte materials, respectively. Semi solid state batteries are a compromise between liquid state batteries and all solid state batteries, and are currently one of the more mature solid-state battery technologies.
Guotai Junan Industry Research has analyzed that the popularization of solid-state batteries will start from semi-solid state and gradually progress. After the technology stabilizes and the process is determined, the cost will decrease. Semi solid state batteries will gradually increase in production, and then gradually iterate to pure solid state batteries, with the iteration speed gradually accelerating.
As a transitional path from liquid state batteries to all solid state batteries, semi-solid state batteries have attracted the attention and layout of many domestic enterprises.
In August this year, Qingtao Energy, also a start-up battery company, completed the first generation semi-solid battery installation experiment jointly developed with SAIC. The test vehicle's maximum range reached 1083 kilometers and will be mass-produced on the SAIC Zhiji Automotive platform next year.
The cost of Qingtao Energy's first generation semi-solid battery is equivalent to that of liquid lithium battery, with a single energy density of 368 Wh/kg and a liquid electrolyte content of 5% -15%.
According to the plan released by Qingtao Energy, its second-generation solid-state battery is planned to be mass-produced next year, with a liquid electrolyte content of less than 5% and a cost 20% lower than that of liquid lithium batteries; The company also plans to achieve mass production of third-generation all solid state batteries in 2027, which will contain no liquid and have a cost reduction of 40% compared to liquid lithium batteries.
Funeng Technology (688567. SH) also announced in November this year that the Far East Y6, equipped with its semi-solid state battery, was officially launched. The latter is a luxury new energy vehicle under the Dayun Group. Funeng Technology also stated that semi-solid state batteries have been implemented in multiple brand models.
In December of this year, Honeycomb Energy launched a new product called the square semi-solid battery, the second-generation jelly battery, at the fourth Battery Day. The battery has now reached mass production status. Yang Hongxin, Chairman of Honeycomb Energy, revealed that he is currently negotiating a billion dollar cooperation on a new second-generation jelly battery product.
In addition, leading battery companies such as Guoxuan High tech (002074. SZ), Yiwei Lithium Energy (300014. SZ), and Zhongchuangxin Aviation (03931. HK) have also entered the semi-solid state battery market.
