The processes of domestic sodium ion batteries and lithium ion batteries are highly similar. Lithium battery giants can quickly surpass start-ups in terms of both output and quality when they transform into sodium batteries. Unless sodium ion batteries completely break through the current material system and change a set of processes, the new company can have more advantages. At present, it is very difficult for startups to surpass lithium battery giants in sodium ion batteries unless there is a step technological breakthrough.
Second, what role will sodium ion batteries play in the development of the industry in the future? From the perspective of lithium battery giants, sodium ion battery is not an offensive weapon but a defensive weapon used to check and balance. It exists to counter the endless pressure of lithium battery enterprises by the upstream. The development of sodium battery can reduce the dependence of lithium battery enterprises on lithium resources, but it is not intended to replace it.
Third, the cycle life, energy density and charge discharge rate of sodium battery are hardly comparable to those of lithium battery at present. Whether it is used for power or energy storage, it is difficult to replace lithium battery in the short term. In order to promote sodium battery rapidly, it is very likely to mix with lithium battery to form a sodium lithium hybrid power system. However, it is hard to say when this hybrid power system will mature, perhaps in 2024.
Now many people are saying that 2023 is the first year of sodium battery. Some two wheeled vehicles or A00 class vehicles will adopt sodium battery power system on a large scale, which is a bit optimistic. There will certainly be some demonstration application projects in 2023, and the real large-scale promotion may be in 2025, but this is my guess, for reference only.
